The main advantage of solar power is that it reduces our dependency on polluting sources of energy and helps us to reduce carbon footprints on the earth. More adoption of solar power can help us mitigating climate change, air pollution and global warming. The main disadvantage of solar power is that it does not produce power at night and thus need energy storage systems to store surplus energy. The intermittency somtimes affects functioning and stablity of the grid. Thus to counter these, in large projects, we need extra investments on energy storage.

These energy storage are charged by solar power during the day. These storaed solar power could later be used either during night or at times when there is power supplied from the grid. One unique advantage of this is unlike grid connected onventional solar inverter, a rooftop solar users using hybrid inverter can still use power when the grid fails to supply power to the household.

To boost the integration of solar power with the Indian grid, the Indian government is promoting on-grid rooftop solar through PM Surya Ghar where special subsidies are given to promote consumers to install rooftop solar. In this system, the surplus (unused) solar power from these systems are injected into the grid. In case of large solar projects, these large amount of solar power are injected into the grid to make the grid more green. Large scale solar projects has also made solar power cheaper than power coming from polluting sources like coal.

While utility scale solar plants are maintained on a fortnightly basis, frequency of maintenance for rooftop solar panels is at least 3-6 times a year. Though, it is advisable to check your solar companies manual for panel specific maintenance care as well. In many parts of India, dusty environments might necessitate monthly module cleanings as well.

The solar panel maintenance cost is influenced by the brand and kind of solar panels installed (monocrystalline vs. polycrystalline), as well as the installation method (shed mounted, ground mounted, RCC mounted). Access is obviously critical. Costs should be low enough to be recoverable from the increased productivity of your plant due to regular maintainance.

The delay could be primarily at two end-one at the solar vendor end and other at the discom-level end. As per consumers’ feedback, sometimes solar vendors delay the installation of the project due to lack of manpower or availability of raw materials while several times discoms delay the process in inspection of the rooftop system post installation, installation of net-meters, testing of meters and final commissioning of the project. However, several state electricity regulators are now issuing directives to streamline the process.
