If you want to undertake rooftop solar business, you need to register with the discom (electricity distribution company) where you want to operate. As per the PM Surya Ghar scheme norms, only the registered solar vendors can undertake residential rooftop solar installations. The consumers can get subsidies for rooftop solar projects under the PM Surya Ghar scheme only if they get their installations done by registered vendors only. The National Rooftop Portal maintains a list of all the registered solar vendors who are undertaking these installations. For getting registered with the local discom, these companies also need to pay annual fees to them to get their registrations done.

On an average it takes one to two months to complete the whole process from your application to the commissioning of the rooftop solar system. However, the real time depends on the state where you live, the proactiveness of the electricity company (discoms) in the region in granting required permissions and the service quality of your solar vendor. In some states like Gujarat, where the whole system is faster, the connections are done within 20 days to one month. We need to keep in mind that in rooftop solar connections, while the solar installation will be done by the vendor, electricity companies handle the issue of installation of net-meters, its testing and final commissioning.

So the generating item in a solar system is not inverter but the solar modules. However, the proper running of inverters is also important. There are many errors like lack of grid power, excess grid voltage and others which can halt its operations. In most inverters, these errors are shown with a code which depict the particular problems with the inverter. Contact your solar project vendor or inverter firm for any clarification or repair if needed.

How to calculate the number of solar panels required for an inverter?

    Solar Faqs Team
    Solar Faqs Team
Team of Solar Faqs | Answer on September 2, 2024 at 11:44 am

It is not the number of solar panels but the total power (in Kwp) that the solar panels can produce. Usually your inverter should align with the expected maximum power the solar modules can produce. So normally if you have a 3 kW of rooftop solar, you will need a 3 kw of solar inverter.

The main benefit of solar compared to using coal or other polluting sources is the reduced Green House Gas emissions, less effect on the local water bodies, less affect on the coal mining etc. Extracting energy from sunlight reduces several such harmful effects which are otherwise involved when we produce energy from fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas. Many of these fossil fuels are exhaustible sources of energy and also their use leads to air pollution and increased global warming.

In this system, the surplus (unused) solar power from these systems are injected into the grid. In case of large solar projects, these large amount of solar power are injected into the grid to make the grid more green. Large scale solar projects has also made solar power cheaper than power coming from polluting sources like coal.

It depends on the sector of solar we talk about. Like for residential rooftop solar, govt gives subsidies of around Rs 78,000 for a 3 Kw system. In case of large projects, there are other incentives through Green Energy Open Access, incentives in transmission, land banks, plug and play services etc.

In most states the maximum capacity of rooftop solar a person can install in upto the total capacity of your power connection (meter). As per the MNRE benchmark price, the total cost for a 3Kw system is Rs 1.45 lakh. However, the final cost of the project is mutually decided by the consumer and solar vendor. So despite the MNRE benchmark price which is not mandatory, the solar project vendors install a 3 Kw system often at higher price ranging from Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 3 lakh based on the technology, reputation of the vendor, services it is providing and other parameters.
