One of the benefits of using solar panels for power generation is that unlike thermal energy, it does not emit green house gases during electricity generation. However, a latest study hinted a minor rise in local temperatures due to the use of inefficient solar panels.

As per consumers’ feedback, sometimes solar vendors delay the installation of the project due to lack of manpower or availability of raw materials while several times discoms delay the process in inspection of the rooftop system post installation, installation of net-meters, testing of meters and final commissioning of the project. However, several state electricity regulators are now issuing directives to streamline the process.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is actually running a subsidized rooftop solar scheme for residential consumers where the consumers can get upto Rs 78,000 subsidies for installting rooftop solar. However, they have to bear the upfront cost on their own at the time of installation. There are other subsidized solar schemes too like PM-KUSUM where farmers get solar pumps with subsidy support.

Usually in a residential rooftop project, a 3 Kw rooftop solar can ideally generate upto 10-12 units per day. The daily generations are usually dependent on the local weather. Usually when there is good sunlight throughout the day, you can get the best generation (if your solar panels are clean). During clouds, rains, the generations reduces. So a system which can generate around 12 Kw per day can also generate 5 kw or 7 Kw during clouds/rains. The generation also varies season to season, depending on the quality of sunlight and availaility of sunlight.

In this system, one can use solar power even duiring blackouts.

The main benefit of solar compared to using coal or other polluting sources is the reduced Green House Gas emissions, less effect on the local water bodies, less affect on the coal mining etc. Extracting energy from sunlight reduces several such harmful effects which are otherwise involved when we produce energy from fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas. Many of these fossil fuels are exhaustible sources of energy and also their use leads to air pollution and increased global warming.
