    ALMM stands for the Approved List of Module Manufacturers. It is a list released by India’s Ministry of New And Renewable Energy (MNRE), and lists all the manufacturers whose modules are approved for use in solar projects in India.

    Following a recent notification on March 27, the MNRE has made it clear that only ALMM approved modules can be used in all government backed projects, and even projects in Open Access and Rooftop solar. That means you could potentially use foreign modules (after paying a 40% customs/import duty), only in off grid solar projects that are not subsidised in any way, if at all.

However, initially, most of their production is expected to be used for captive consumption. So you may not need modules manufactured by Reliance being available for sale until much later.

    However REC, a Singapore based firm that has been in the business of making solar modules  for a long time was acquired by Reliance Industries in 2021. To that extent, you can buy modules from a Reliance owned module manufacturer even today in India.

All previous levels in the chain, from cells to wafers to ingot and polysilicon, are not made in India, other than a little captive capacity for solar cells with some manufacturers.  Most of these are imported from China and are then embedded into a panel in India. Thus, with a capacity of over 60 GW now, in future, all solar modules you see are likely to have been ‘made’ in India.

    Generally, rooftop solar offers an ROI of over at least 20% in most markets today. Hence, it gives a payback period of about 4-5 years. Even without any subsidy or incentives, chances are, it will pay back your investment in 7 years or less with good maintenance and a net metering regime.

So really hot temperatures offer no benefit to users.

    Yes, Mounted solar panels are available in the market and are being used widely. BIPV (Building Integrated PV) for instance refers to panels that are used as substitutes for windows. Similarly, solar panels are being used on balcony’s now, besides for fencing as a solar fence.     The most common metric we see in use is typically $/watt or Rs/watt in India. As it says, what that means is you consider the module cost, and divide it by its nameplate capacity to arrive at a number. As it says, what that means is you consider the module cost, and divide it by its nameplate capacity to arrive at a number. Thus, a 500 Watt module priced at say, Rs 8000 per module will give you a RS/W cost of Rs 16 per Watt. While this measure works for smaller projects, you might want to consider many other factors for larger projects.

    These range from the technology you prefer (Mono PERC or TOCon or even HJT) , to rate of degradation, thermal performance etc. With larger modules in recent years, we have also seen that these are faster and easier to install, although there is an enhanced risk of breakage as well during setup.  Similarly, how these are aligned to other key suppliers like trackers (in case you have opted for them) to even the inverters matters. So make sure to consider all these factors carefully.

    Remember, cost per Watt should be your starting point, no more. Look for credible, third party validated indicators for all other key parameters, before deciding finally.
